Flying With Family: Seats, Bags and Planning
Traveling with children or a larger group changes what matters most: sitting together, enough bags, and connections that are not too tight.
Seats
- Ask whether seats can be chosen at booking, and what it costs, especially on the lowest fare levels.
- Do not assume that family members will be seated together without selecting seats.
- If seat selection is limited, ask the airline whether adjacent seats can be arranged.
Infants and young children
Airlines have rules about children under two, who can often travel on an adult's lap on domestic flights, but may need a ticket or a separate seat on international trips. Ask about the airline's policy and whether you need proof of age.
Bags and gear
- Strollers and car seats usually travel free in addition to bag allowances on many airlines, but check the current policy.
- Count the total bags and weights for your group before comparing fares.
Itinerary choices that help
- Prefer nonstop flights when possible.
- Avoid very short connections and very late arrivals.
- Choose daytime flights that fit your children's routines.
- Give yourself time at the airport to get through security calmly.
